I asked some French friends about their favorite proverbs. Their answers surprised me. I put the ones they mentioned in this post. Though when you look it up online, you get very different results.
1. Fais du bien à Bertrand, il te le rend en cagant.
Do good to Bertrand, he will pay you back with ungratefulness (it comes back to bite you).
2. «Qui aime bien châtie bien.»
Who loves well punishes well.
3. Celui qui sème l’injustice moissonne le malheur.
One who sows injustice reaps misfortune.
4. On ne voit bien qu avec le cœur… L essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly… What is essential is invisible to the eye.
5. On Vie 2 fois !! La deuxième c’est lorsque on à bien compris que l’on a qu’une Vie
We live twice!! The second time starts when we realize that we only have one life.
6. «le soleil me fait chanter et toi tu me fais chier»
The sun is making me sing, and you are pissing me off.
7. Une main lave l’autre
One hand washes the other (You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours).
8. Registre perso: « l’homme propose, la femme dispose »
In the personal sphere: Man proposes, woman disposes.
9. Neige en novembre, Noël en décembre.
Snow is in November, Christmas is in December.
10. L’idéal est comme l’étoile pour le marin, on ne peut l’attraper mais elle reste un guide
The ideal is like a star for a seaman, it can’t be attained, but it remains the guiding light.
11. Comme on fait son lit on se couche
You have made your bed, now you have to lie in it.
12. Après la pluie il y a le beau temps
Good weather always comes after the rain (every cloud has a silver lining).
13. «On n’est jamais mieux servi que par soi-même».
You want the job done well, you do it yourself.
14. «L’habit ne fait pas le moine».
It’s not the clothes that makes one a monk.
15. «Il est plus facile de conseiller que de faire».
It’s easier to advise than act.
